What’s the diving like?
The Great Lakes of Northern Michigan are home to numerous shipwrecks, making it an ideal destination for those interested in underwater exploration. From the Straits of Mackinac to the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, divers can discover the remains of historic vessels that have met their fateful end beneath the waves.
Exploring these shipwrecks offers a unique opportunity to dive into the region's maritime history, from the earliest wooden schooners to more modern steel-hulled ships. Some of the most popular wrecks to explore include the Eber Ward, a 200-foot steamer that sank in 1909, and the Joseph S. Fay, a 266-foot-long vessel that met its end in 1905.
In addition to the shipwrecks themselves, the Great Lakes offer divers a chance to see a wide variety of aquatic life, including freshwater fish and plants. Whether you're a seasoned wreck diver or a beginner looking to explore the underwater world, the Great Lakes of Northern Michigan have something to offer.
The Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Preserve covers a vast area of 148 square miles, stretching from the Cheboygan area to Wilderness State Park, encompassing the majority of the South Channel and extending to the northern edge of Mackinac Island. The preserve is divided by the iconic Mackinac Bridge, which effectively separates it into two distinct regions.
Encompassing the offshore waters of Mackinaw City and St. Ignace, as well as the shorelines of Bois Blanc Island, Mackinac Island, Round Island, and St. Helena Island, the preserve is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the region's rich maritime history. Visitors can explore a diverse array of shipwrecks scattered throughout the preserve, providing a unique opportunity to glimpse the past and explore the underwater world
