Journey to the Ghost Fleet – Dive Into History at Truk Lagoon
Truk Lagoon isn’t just another dive destination — it’s a living museum created by one of the most significant naval strikes of World War II. In February 1944, during Operation Hailstone, U.S. carrier forces launched a surprise two-day assault on Japan’s heavily fortified fleet base here. The attack sank more than 40 ships and destroyed over 250 aircraft, crippling Japan’s presence in the Pacific.
Eighty years later, these wrecks remain preserved beneath warm, clear waters, now draped in vibrant coral and teeming with marine life. Divers can explore cargo holds still filled with trucks, tanks, and ammunition, swim past silent artillery, and even glide over intact aircraft resting on the lagoon floor.
And you won’t just read about this history — you’ll dive it with Glenn Ray, our local technical diving instructor and guide. Glenn has years of experience leading both open-circuit recreational and technical/rebreather divers, tailoring each dive to your certification level and comfort while making the history come alive.
Whether you’re an open-water certified diver ready for your first international wreck adventure or an advanced technical diver seeking deep penetrations, Truk Lagoon offers an unmatched combination of exploration, challenge, and meaning.

What’s the diving like?
Family Friendly?
Sorry No, This expedition is built for divers who want to maximize time underwater — not for sightseeing or family vacationing. Our Truk Lagoon trip is 100% focused on diving, with days dedicated to exploring historic WWII wrecks from Operation Hailstone.
Known For:
Truk Lagoon is recognized worldwide as the premier wreck diving destination. The calm, sheltered waters of this remote Micronesian atoll hold over 40 sunken warships, cargo vessels, submarines, and aircraft — the remnants of Japan’s Pacific fleet destroyed during Operation Hailstone in 1944.
The wrecks are renowned for their preservation. Coral-covered decks and superstructures remain intact, and many still hold wartime cargo: trucks, tanks, artillery, torpedoes, and even aircraft in the holds. For divers, this means the rare chance to combine exploration, history, and marine life in one unforgettable trip.
Whether you’re diving on open-circuit recreational gear or taking on deep penetrations as a technical or rebreather diver, Truk Lagoon is known for delivering bucket-list dives that few destinations can match.
Water Temp:
82–84 °F
Diving in Truk Lagoon is warm, calm, and unforgettable. With water temperatures hovering around 82–84°F (28–29°C) year-round and visibility often ranging 60–100+ ft (18–30 m), conditions are ideal for extended wreck exploration.
Most wrecks are sheltered inside the lagoon, keeping surface conditions gentle. Shallow sites are perfect for open-circuit recreational divers who want long, relaxed bottom times, while deeper wrecks and penetration routes challenge technical and rebreather divers.
You’ll descend onto coral-covered ships, glide along decks, and swim into cavernous cargo holds where history remains — trucks, tanks, aircraft, torpedoes, and more. Soft and hard corals have transformed these wartime relics into thriving artificial reefs, home to schooling fish, reef sharks, and macro life.
Every dive offers a mix of history, marine life, and exploration — whether you’re making a simple swim-through or navigating deep inside a battleship’s engine room.
Itineraire/Group Excursion Options:
For Recreational Divers
Most wrecks sit between 25–35m (82–115ft), perfect for divers with Advanced Open Water or equivalent certification. You’ll explore historic ships like the Fujikawa Maru, Shinkoku Maru, and Kensho Maru, with their decks, holds, and artifacts still telling stories from 1944 — all within recreational limits. No advanced penetration required, just great wrecks with easy swim-throughs, coral growth, and rich marine life.
For Technical Divers
If you’re qualified for deeper wreck or penetration diving, Truk offers legendary deep sites like the San Francisco Maru at 60m (195ft), the Hoki Maru (down to 50m/165ft), and the Nippo Maru with features at both recreational and tech depths. You’ll have the freedom to plan extended bottom times and explore areas most divers never see.
Our 10-Night Truk Lagoon Liveaboard
Spend ten unforgettable nights exploring the legendary wrecks of the WWII Japanese Imperial Navy fleet — and discover that Truk Lagoon offers more than just history. Between dives on iconic wrecks, you’ll also experience pristine reefs where channels cut through the barrier, attracting reef sharks, schooling pelagics, and a rich variety of marine life.
Many of the wrecks rest within recreational depth limits, perfect for open-circuit divers. For those who want to go deeper into history, full technical and rebreather support is available, allowing extended dives and advanced penetrations.
A typical day offers up to four dives, adding up to as many as 34 dives over the trip. When anchored inside the lagoon, the final dive of the day may be replaced with a night dive, adding another dimension to the wreck experience.
